How to measure a running route
Three tools measure a running route — a GPS watch, a mapping tool, and the mile markers painted on the ground — and they'll give you three slightly different answers. None of them is broken. Here's what each one is good for, which to trust on trails, and the one piece of trail-listing wording that fools almost everybody.
The five-step method
- Decide whether you need a planned distance or a recorded one. Planning a route before you run it calls for a mapping tool or a posted trail distance. Knowing how far you actually went calls for a GPS watch or phone. The two rarely agree exactly, and that is normal.
- Draw the route on a mapping tool. Trace the path on a route-planning map and let it total the distance. It follows the line you draw, so trace the trail itself rather than a straight line, and use satellite view to confirm the path actually connects.
- Check the trail operator for a posted distance. Park and rail-trail agencies publish measured trail lengths and loop distances. This is the most reliable figure for a marked corridor, and it separates a real loop distance from a trail system total.
- Use mile markers on the ground. Rail-trails and greenways are often posted at every mile or half mile. Markers are the simplest accurate way to run an exact distance: run to the marker that equals half your target and turn around.
- Record the run with GPS, and read it with judgment. A GPS watch gives you a recorded distance and a map of where you went. Under a heavy tree canopy or in a steep valley the signal degrades and the recorded distance can come up short or wander.
GPS watches and phones
A GPS device works by fixing your position repeatedly and adding up the straight lines between fixes. On an open road that's very close to the truth. On a trail, two things go wrong at once.
First, tree cover degrades the signal. A thick canopy, a deep valley or a rock wall blocks and reflects satellite signals, so the watch gets fewer and noisier fixes. Second, trails twist, and a device connecting sparse fixes with straight lines cuts every corner. The two combine to make trail runs read short. It can also go the other way — a scrambled signal in a valley produces a jagged track that adds phantom distance — but short is the common case.
Practical fixes: let the watch acquire a signal fully before you start, use the multi-band or "best accuracy" GPS setting if your watch has one, and don't compare a canopy run to a road run as if the numbers mean the same thing. Mapping tools
Route-planning tools let you click a path on a map and get a total. They're the best way to plan a route before you run it, especially for stitching together segments of a loop or checking whether two trails actually connect.
Two cautions. A mapping tool measures the line you drew, so a sloppy trace across switchbacks under-measures badly — zoom in and follow the path. And a drawn line doesn't know about a closed bridge, a private-property section or a trail that dead-ends. Cross-check in satellite view, and check the park operator's page for closures before you commit to a long route.
Mile markers and posted distances
The most under-appreciated measuring tool is a wooden post. Rail-trails and greenways are frequently marked every mile or half mile, and those markers were placed from a real survey rather than a satellite estimate. If you want to know that you ran exactly six miles, a trail with mile markers beats every gadget.
Trailhead signs and park maps are the other ground truth. They list loop distances, corridor end-to-end lengths and connector mileages. When a posted distance and your watch disagree by a few percent on a wooded trail, the sign is usually the better number.
System miles vs loop miles — the trap
This is the single most common misreading in trail listings. A park that advertises "20 miles of trails" is almost never offering a 20-mile run. That figure is the sum of every path in the trail system — spurs, connectors, parallel routes, a nature loop by the parking lot — added together. The longest continuous run available might be four miles.
What you actually want is a loop distance or a corridor's end-to-end length. Those are the numbers a runner can plan with, and they're what our listings show wherever the trail publishes them. How to run an exact distance
- Out-and-back to half. The simplest exact-distance method there is: run out to the marker at half your target and come back. No navigation, no loop-closure problem, and you can bail early if the day goes wrong.
- Repeat a measured loop. Two laps of a posted 3-mile loop is a reliable 6 miles, and it keeps you near parking, water and restrooms.
- Use a smooth, open corridor for pace work. A paved or crushed-limestone path with mile markers and clear sky gives you both accurate GPS and a physical cross-check.
- Calibrate your local loop once. Run it, compare with the posted distance, and note the offset. After that you know what your watch does on that trail.

- Why does my GPS watch under-read distance on trails?
- GPS needs a clear view of the sky. A dense tree canopy, a narrow valley or tall buildings block and scatter the signal, so the watch logs fewer position fixes and effectively cuts corners on a twisting trail. Woodland singletrack is the worst case, which is why trail distances often read short compared with a posted trail length.
- What is the most accurate way to measure a running route?
- For a marked corridor, the operator posted distance and on-the-ground mile markers are the most dependable.
