Loop Trails (No Backtracking)

A loop trail finishes where it started — no backtracking, no car shuttle, no arranging a ride at the far end. That is why route shape sits just behind distance in how runners pick a trail: a loop gives you a known distance, fresh scenery the whole way round, and your car waiting at the end of it. Lollipop loops, where a short stem leads out to a circuit, work the same way in practice; an out-and-back means seeing everything twice, and a true point-to-point needs two cars or a shuttle, which is usually what rules it out on a weekday morning.

4,405 trails in this directory carry this feature, across 51 states. Labels come from each trail's own listing, its website and what runners wrote in reviews — trails change, lights and gates follow the park's hours, so check a recent review before a long drive.
