These are the trails with enough continuous distance to build a real long run on — five miles or more in one direction, or a loop long enough that you are not lapping it six times. It is the hardest thing to read off a map, because a park advertising “20 miles of trails” usually means twenty miles of interconnected short segments rather than a twenty-mile route. Distance also raises the stakes on everything else: water, a restroom somewhere along the way and a trailhead you can get back to are all worth checking before a two-hour effort.
