Shaded Running Trails
Shade is the difference between a pleasant July run and one you cut short. A tree canopy keeps both the air and the surface beneath it cooler, which is why an exposed greenway across open ground becomes a heat trap in midsummer, and for much of the year in the South — the same path that is perfect in April can be unrunnable at noon in August. The flip side is worth knowing: shaded woodland holds moisture, so those trails stay muddy longer after rain and take longer to dry out in spring.
