Confirmed from Battle Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Forested university nature site with a noteworthy stone amphitheater, walking trails & streams.
What runners say about Battle Park
“Beautiful, serene, cool and gentle slopes with predominantly flat well maintained paths along creeks.”
“It is relatively quiet as well - only time you ever hear anybody else is when you are passing or they are seated at a bench.”
Unbelievable area. And to be clear it's not a park it's an area of open wilderness that has super awesome, well laid out paths all throughout. There are fantastic features in various different pockets of it. And it's amazing because it feels vast and extensive, but yet right in the middle of town.
Good trails for a short casual walk near and adjoining the UNC-Chapel Hill campus
Absolutely incredible walking trails. Very lovely in the fall after the leaves fall. People live in the castle, please be respectful. Stone Amphitheater is amazing. Beware of dog poo
Beautiful walking trails! Although if it’s recently rained, steer clear because it gets extremely muddy.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
