Confirmed from Elkhorn Crest National Recreation Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Elkhorn Crest National Recreation Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (17 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

The trail I took was marble trail I packed in 4.25 miles but was losing the daylight before I could make the lakes I started late afternoon around 2 saw a herd of goats got pretty close the first 4 miles of trail are pretty flat the last mile is a bunch of switchbacks the views are breathtaking I hope to be back out…

Amazing views. Trail from Marble Pass was gradual and easy. Goats all over. Didn't see anyone else on the trail all day.

★★★★★ — Rich , Oct 2019

The trail is in great shape and the weather is perfect this time of year.

★★★★★ — Goodnight , Oct 2021

Easy hike along top of elkhorns. Lovely views of both sides. Sadly didn't see any mountain goats but there was recent evidence. Enjoyed a variety of sunshine, wind, rain, and sleet. Still had snow to climb over in spots at the end of june

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
