We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Great Swamp Management Area yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Great Swamp Management Area

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (53 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 5 mentions

“It is a clean well kept facility that I enjoy shooting at because of the helpful staff and the ability to teach my son how to shoot.”

Seems like most people come here for the gun ranges, which are nice. I went there for the archery range. It's 1 bale, out to about 40 yards. It's nicely shaded. You'll need to check in at the gun range before shooting. The office on the way in is not the right place to start.

Signed up for the permit, took the class and have had a couple of great experiences here in the past. This place is clean and well kept. They run a great operation here. The staff is good mostly all former Military or LE. I will be shooting some clay pigeons and some 100 yard rifle shooting.

This is a pretty cool place to visit but make sure you bring some bug spray because about ten minutes in you will be swarmed with nats the whole trail, other than that it is a nice serene hike with quite a few clearings, offshoots for enjoying nature, and ponds to oogle at.

★★★★☆ — Joshua , May 2018

A great place to watch birds and wildlife around the swamps. Oak and maple forests on the higher ground . No great vistas but a nice day hike or for mountain biking on the dirt roads and fire trails. It is a hunting area for much of the year. Orange vests, etc required.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
