Confirmed from Green River Lakes Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Hiking area with a campground, wildlife sightings, and a public restroom.
What runners say about Green River Lakes Trailhead
“If you are looking for a beautiful hike without the Big Sandy and Elkhart trailhead crowds, I would recommend GRL.”
If you are looking for a beautiful hike without the Big Sandy and Elkhart trailhead crowds, I would recommend GRL. Def would recommend 4wd. Expect about an hour of dirt road, usually washed out. Lol 😆 Totally worth it though...Slide lake is one of my fav hikes
In early June, it was a slow drive in across the dirt road to get to the trail head, but once in is a great experience. We backpacked in a couple of miles for our first camp. Did NOT use the campground. Spent a week backpacking before the rangers cleared the paths. Counted over 100 trees across the marked paths.
Hiked around the lake. Garmin watch clocked it at 6.4 miles. So beautiful. Quite a few mosquitos on the Lakeview Side, but with repellent they left us alone as long as we kept moving. The other side of the lake has much less shade-- recommend hiking it clockwise.
We loved it, just a short hike to the lake and cabins with the kids but it was beautiful. No mosquitos for us, I don’t know if it’s now cool enough or if it was time of day (12-3p), but thought I’d report that.
Trail conditions & character
“I did the trail along the lake for about 3/4 miles and it was filled with views of squaretop mountain the whole way.”
“Hiked 35 miles (roundtrip) from the trailhead to Sourdough Glacier and back.”
“Road in has some rocky spots but was passable for 2WD (no boulders or muddy spots)(they were moving slow, but somebody made it in a minivan).”
“The Highline Trail is filled with stunning views of Flat Top Mountain, Square Top Mountain, and Lost Eagle Peak from start to finish.”
“If you are looking for a beautiful hike without the Big Sandy and Elkhart trailhead crowds, I would recommend GRL.”
