Confirmed from Highlands Trail Overlook's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Highlands Trail Overlook

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (18 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“Great hike great views come up from sussex branch trail”

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions

“We parked at the Earthworm lot and followed the well marked trails to the two overlooks.”

I entered through the Allamuchy sussex trail parking and went into the yellow trail found when you cross the small bridge. To get to the overlook you have make a left at a sign that says pebble loop trail that I took a picture of below.

★★★★☆ — Ricky , Nov 2020

Challenging and rocky trail to the top, not well marked but worth it at the end. Follow the blue markings on the trees for the shortest but most difficult climb or yellow markings for the long and moderate trail.

★★★★☆ — Julian , Jul 2023

The views were absolutely stunning! We parked at the Earthworm lot and followed the well marked trails to the two overlooks. The hike was quite short too and not difficult. Quiet in December. Very worth the 1 hour drive.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

“A little huffing and puffing during a short steep section during the first quarter mile, which makes for good exercise, but not too much to handle.”
