Confirmed from Joseph P Whipey Hiking Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 3 mentions

“Very beautiful and great time in the pa wild,”

Wonderful trail many birds including eagles. Saw deer and easy walking

★★★★★ — Ron , Dec 2016

Make sure you bring a good pair of shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Trail is rocky in spots, with others being slippery from mud or waters. An overall good hike that will get those needed steps in. Would recommend having bringing water along. Alot of forest life to be seen and heard.

★★★★★ — Jen , Jul 2022

Absolutely beautiful. Went for a nice hike and found some great mushrooms along the way. Definitely where good hiking boots, take a walking stick, and don't be afraid to wander a bit. Just keep the lake to your back so you don't get lost. Don't eat anything you're not sure of. ☠️

★★★★★ — Edward , Oct 2025

Not well marked. Should have looked at a map first. Nice hike, just not sure I was on the right trail

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

💡 Lit for night running 2 mentions

“For taking pictures of star, almost no light pollution.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
