We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Santa Fe Trail Tracks yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Historical spot along the highway where ruts in the earth were left by wagon trains.
What runners say about Santa Fe Trail Tracks
“Beautiful views of the high plains prairie and valley of the (now dry) Arkansas River.”
The 21 year old version of me stopped here on my first road trip across the country in March of '81. The prairie grass hadn't started growing for the season yet so the tracks were visible, but yikes it was windy, cold, and miserable. I think I remember it being a muddy path back then and not a nice walkway like now.
The Santa Fe Trail Ruts are actually a very well done display of an extremely interesting piece of history. As the heavy, steel tired wagons rolled down the Santa Fe trail the weight compacted the soil. In time ruts formed and got deeper and deeper. Eventually they moved over and the process repeated.
The trail is short and neat. Jest a few minutes out of Dodge City. Lots of cool flowers and hidden history. Only takes a few minutes to enjoy.
Beautiful views of the high plains prairie and valley of the (now dry) Arkansas River. Faint wagon trails still visible across the landscape.
