Confirmed from Sawyer Mountain Rte. 117 Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Sawyer Mountain Rte. 117 Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (48 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 3 mentions

“Great views from the summit; go nearer sunset for the best experience.”

🪧 well-marked 3 mentions

“Well marked trail systems with maps at limington TH.”

Nice hike, finished in about an hour and a half. It feels like a dirt road or ATV trail for most of the way. It says it is a loop trail but I would say not to go up the right side of the loop unless you like hiking on loose rocks. The other side was much nicer! Not too many views at the summit but still beautiful.

★★★★☆ — Emily , Oct 2023

This was a fun hike. The straight route up Sawyer Mountain is loose rock and wet but very doable. The summit has very little view, but as you head down trail, you can get a nice viewpoint with even a picnic table. There is also a half mile nature loop hike which would be great for the young kids.

Great local trail with some obstructed views from the top. The old Sawyer Mountain road is badly eroded in sections with poor footing. The wooded portions of the trail are great and provide a real feeling of solitude. Lots of cool historical places of interested including old cellar holes and cemeteries.

★★★★☆ — Ryan , Apr 2021

There is a good variety of hiking surfaces on this trail. Rocks, mud, dry pack, and roots. Part of the trail used to be a road and is still partly in use. Much work has been done to create lookout locations so there are more destinations than just the summit.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 18 mentions

“It's a lot harder going up then going down, you're pretty much climbing rocks the entire time but the view is amazing.”
