Confirmed from Trailside Nature & Science Center's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
4,500-sq.-ft. interactive museum dedicated to the natural world & overlooking Watchung Reservation.
What runners say about Trailside Nature & Science Center
“Well kept, clean, safe with plenty of things to see and learn about!”
One of our favorite local places to go with our toddlers. Well kept, clean, safe with plenty of things to see and learn about! Great trails outside with sensory experiences and a playground walking distance in the loop.
It really is such a great place! I took my kids on the weekend and it wasn't crowded. I really like that it was a great education experience, and enough hands-on activities to keep my kids engaged. It's completely free and once done seeing the center and playing in the play room, there's a trail and a playground.
Great place to bring your kids for an hour or so. We have not gone to the trails yet but the facility is great. Indoor fish pond, snakes, wigwam, shiny rocks, and great view of the bird feeding station. Night time sounds theater may be a bit loud for young kids. Air conditioned for a hot day.
What a great center! Firstly, it’s completely free which frankly is a miracle these days. It’s packed full of interesting facts that engage both kids and adults alike. You enter to see a huge tree spanning 3 floors and along the way there are lots of hidden surprises for the children to spot.

“Amazing place full of plants, animals, darkness and lights, and even a toy room!”
“Three floors of amazing content While there are water fountains, nowhere are guests allowed to eat anything indoors.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadrestrooms, water — reported by runners
