Confirmed from Vulture Peak's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Vulture Peak

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (23 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

Good trail up taking the Ridge Road Trail, rocky so be careful and go slow if you need to.

★★★★★ — Donald , Apr 2019

Living nearby I easily hike to this peak once a week. It's a brisk hike ending at a nice peak with a bench and 360º views of the areas just south of downtown with a good view of downtown as well. From most of the trailheads, an avid hiker can make it up in 20 minutes or less.

★★★★★ — Evan , Apr 2023

Didn't know this was called Vulture Peak! Fun and accessible hike with beautiful views of San Luis Obispo. Great point to go to with a hiking dog or to have a picnic.

★★★★★ — Marc , Jul 2018

Moderate level hike. Wear good shoes or hiking boots as you will be on or around rocks. Views are well worth the hike. Bring your camera.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
