Confirmed from Walnut Grove Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Walnut Grove Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (45 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 5 mentions

“Beautiful surroundings, stunning views of the lake, and the ease of access make this a destination for hiking and horseback riding.”

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions

“The trailhead is well marked & small parking area for 4-5 autos.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 3 mentions

“It was so peaceful and quiet.”

This makes for an easy day hike that hugs Grapevine Lake. Not a whole lot of elevation gain or loss, from the part that I did. There are a lot of branches in the trail that might confuse people, but taking the forks that kept me closest to Lake Grapevine made it easy to keep track of where I was.

★★★★★ — Kaitlin , Jan 2023

Great hiking place close to the city. Trails can bear more signs on where to go and what further hiking options you have on your trails. Late fall and winter there are lots of burrs on the trais, so long furred 🐕 s do not appreciate them.

★★★★☆ — Harriet , Dec 2020

We "stumbled" upon this trail and it was "smooth sailing" from there! The trail hugs the shoreline of Grapevine Lake most of the time and is relatively flat with little, to no, variation in elevation. Even though it rained while we were on the trail, the sand resulted in virtually no impact on the trail itself.

★★★★☆ — Glen , Apr 2026

The trailhead is well marked & small parking area for 4-5 autos. The trail leaves the trees quickly & is mostly sandy and challenging walking along the lake. The high water in spring 2019 has left many limbs and blocked area along the trail.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
