Confirmed from West Essex Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Woodsy area featuring walking and biking trails, with wildlife sightings.
What runners say about West Essex Trail
“Easy hike; some slight inclines.”
Finding entrance could be little tricky . Please see my entrance pics for help . Very nice place to have a longgg walk . Pleasant surroundings. Very good for bike ride. The trail goes through houses and backyards ad and smalls . There are benches to rest through out the trail.
Nice flat trail for walking and, in some cases, biking. Paths are not wide enough for bikes and pedestrians, but through communication, pedestrians can step to the side. Wildlife you can expect out of the blue and some photographic opportunities.
Great place for a great pleasant forested easy long walk. It is about 3 miles one way. The only downside is that it ends right at a railroad and not at a street (unlike the entrance).
Easy enough for kids and single speeds, 6mi end to end. The hills are mostly gentle sloped so my 1st and 5th graders made handy work of the trail. It was just long enough of a ride that the kids didn’t Birch and moan which is a win anyway in my book. Needless to say both kids were worn out after the 1-hr ride. Enjoy!

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
