Confirmed from West Rock South Overlook's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about West Rock South Overlook

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (55 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“Great trail in new haven, up the mountain, nice elevation gain and really nice view, go a sunset and it's really beautiful.”

One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen amazing walk and even better when with loved ones

★★★★★ — Molly , Jul 2023

We as a family love this place. Not for hiking, we don’t like hiking but otherwise there are many trails, coming down the ridge. One that comes down to Judges cave is exciting. Normally we do picnic on the top , where park authority has built a covered sitting/ dining area.

★★★★★ — Khalid , Nov 2024

Nice place to watch sunset over the city of New Haven and the Long Island sound. On clear days you can even see the shores of Long Island, which is pretty cool. Also views of East Rock and a neat angle on Sleeping Giant State Park which really allows you to see how it got that name.

★★★★★ — Sarah , Sep 2022

It's a long 7 to 8 hour mid pace hike to go around the park . Starting with the red trail easy to mid level on the east side. West side blue trail hard level. You get a chance to see a lot of natural sceneries.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 22 mentions

“Cool spot to watch the sunset, 4th of July fireworks, bring dogs, and just enjoy the scenery all around the area with views over to Sleeping Giant and across the sound.”
