Confirmed from Wharton Plantation's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Wharton Plantation
“I enjoy going for drives with no destinations, and I've found some beautiful roads/scenery out here.”
“There is pretty good signage and the trails are well maintained.”
In July, the horse flies are so thick here, when you swat one, you'll hit 3. If you have bug nets for your head, wear those or you will regret your life choices. There are several trails and forest roads here, and it connects with other local forests and conservation areas.
This is a nice place to get out into nature, especially for birding. There is pine forest, multiple wetlands, seasonal streams, and it borders a powerline cut for long views. There is a heron rookery at one of the wetlands. We park at the dirt pullout on Martins Pond Rd.
First, you should know this is basically a giant tree farm. That being said, the place is very well signed, has clearly maintained trails, and the beaver ponds are fantastic. With the amount of standing water here, I'd recommend not coming in the middle of bug season.
Recently I've been riding more in this area. I enjoy going for drives with no destinations, and I've found some beautiful roads/scenery out here. I started off in the Wharton Plantation and used my phone mount for navigation on the trails. I actually headed south and linked into many different trails.

“From there we follow the trails past multiple wetlands until we reach the powerline cut, and then loop back from there.”

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
