Rail-trails and greenways explained
If you've ever run a perfectly flat, arrow-straight path for six miles without crossing a road, you've run a rail-trail. These corridors are the backbone of American distance running outside of tracks and roads, and they're the single best answer to "where do I do my long run?" Here's what the words mean and how to run them well.
What a rail-trail is
A rail trail is a path built on the bed of an abandoned railroad line. When a rail corridor is retired, the rails and ties come out and what's left is a continuous strip of engineered ground running through towns, farmland and river valleys — often for tens of miles.
The magic is in the engineering that was already done. Trains can't climb steep hills, so rail engineers cut, filled and graded their routes to hold gentle, consistent gradients. That's why rail-trails feel flat and fast in a way no other trail does: the terrain was flattened for a locomotive a century before you ran on it. The bridges, embankments and cuttings that carry the trail across creeks and roads were built for the same reason, which is why you can run for miles without stopping at an intersection.
Greenway, towpath, MUP: the vocabulary
- Greenway — a linear park corridor, usually following a river, creek, ridge or utility right-of-way through a city or county. Some greenways include rail-trail segments; most are paved.
- Towpath — the path alongside a canal, where mules once towed barges. Dead flat, often crushed stone or cinder, and frequently historic.
- Multi-use path (MUP) — the functional description: a path shared by runners, walkers, cyclists, skaters and often dog-walkers. Most rail-trails and greenways are MUPs.
- Riverwalk — an urban waterfront path, usually short, paved and scenic.
- Linear park — a park shaped like a corridor rather than a block. Same idea as a greenway, different agency wording.
- Hike and bike trail — common regional term, especially in Texas and the Southeast, for the same thing.
They overlap constantly, and the label matters less than the three facts underneath it: surface, length, and whether bikes are on it.
The surfaces
Crushed limestone and screenings — the classic rail-trail surface and, for a lot of runners, the ideal one. It packs down firm enough to hold an honest tempo pace, but it has real give compared with asphalt and almost none of the trip hazards of singletrack. It can soften in spring thaw or after heavy rain, and it dusts in high summer.
Asphalt and concrete — the urban greenway standard. Fast, all-weather, stroller and wheelchair friendly, plowed in winter in some cities, and hard on the legs over long miles. This is the surface that keeps a trail runnable in February.
Cinder — the original rail ballast on some older corridors. Soft, quiet, slower, and puddle-prone.
Boardwalk — where the corridor crosses wetland. Scenic and flat; slick when wet or frosty.
Long trails frequently change surface along their length — paved through town, crushed stone in the countryside — so check the segment you're planning to run rather than the trail as a whole. That's what our surface pages are for.
Why runners love them
- Long, uninterrupted miles. No stoplights, no driveways, no negotiating traffic. You can settle into a rhythm and stay there. See long-run trails.
- Gentle, consistent grade. Perfect for steady efforts and for anyone building mileage.
- Measured distance. Many corridors are posted at every mile or half mile, which makes them the easiest place to run an exact distance — trails with mile markers.
- Real trailheads. Parking, maps, and often restrooms and water — the amenities that make long runs practical.
- Beginner-friendly. Consistent surface, no navigation problems, easy bail-out points. This is the standard recommendation for a first trail run, and the reason it appears in how to start trail running.
- Accessible. Paved greenways are usually the most stroller and wheelchair accessible running you can find.
The trade-offs
- Bikes. Multi-use means multi-use. Bike traffic is the most common complaint runners make about these corridors, particularly on busy urban segments at commute times. Keep right, hold a predictable line, and see trail running etiquette.
- Exposure. Many rail corridors were cleared wide and never regrew, so long stretches are fully exposed with no canopy. In July that's a heat trap. Look for shaded trails in summer, or run early.
- Point-to-point shape. A rail corridor goes from A to B, so unless you arrange a shuttle you're running an out-and-back. That's fine — see loop vs out-and-back — but it means the "24-mile trail" is a 12-mile turnaround for most people.
- Gaps. Not every corridor is continuous. Some have unfinished segments, road detours, or a bridge that hasn't been rebuilt. Check the operator's current map before committing to a long point-to-point.
- Flooding. River-following greenways flood, and low sections stay silty afterwards. After heavy rain, check recent reports.
- Sameness. Flat and straight is efficient. It's also, on a long run, monotonous — some runners love it, some need the variety of natural-surface trail.
How to run one
Pick your turnaround before you start rather than "seeing how it goes" — on a flat corridor it's easy to get carried away outbound and face the same distance home. If there's a prevailing wind, run into it on the way out. Note the trailhead you parked at, because on a long straight corridor they start to look alike. And if you're running a corridor that passes through towns, use the town stops as your water and restroom plan.
