Boardwalk Trails
Elevated wood or composite decking, usually carrying a path over marsh, wetland, dune or shoreline where a conventional trail cannot go. Boardwalks are flat and dead-level, and they are often the most scenic stretch of any route — the payoff is water views and wildlife you cannot reach otherwise. Two things to plan around: wet or frosty decking is slippery, with newer composite gripping better than old planks, and boardwalks tend to be narrow, so on a busy weekend you are sharing a few feet of width with walkers stopping for photos. Most are a segment inside a longer trail rather than a run in themselves.

The other surfaces
Worth knowing: the honest answer to which surface is best for your legs is more than one of them, so it pays to keep a route on each.
Paved & Asphalt Trails
Asphalt or concrete — fast, predictable, stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, and runnable year-round.
Crushed Limestone & Gravel Trails
Crushed limestone or packed gravel — the rail-trail classic. Softer than pavement, still smooth enough for tempo runs.
Natural-Surface & Dirt Trails
Dirt and singletrack — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain.
Mixed-Surface Trails
More than one surface along the route — check the segment you plan to run.
You can also browse by what a trail offers rather than what it is made of — loop routes, long-run distance, shade, lighting and everything else — or start from your state.
