Confirmed from Air Line Riverside Dr Thompson's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Hiking, biking & horseback riding along a scenic, 50-mile linear trail that was once a railroad bed.

What runners say about Air Line Riverside Dr Thompson

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (140 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“After completing the SNETT trail and continued onto the Airline Trail, we traveled for a number of miles on well groomed gravel with beautiful scenery.”

👟 good for all levels 3 mentions

“There is an easy trail that is flat and relatively straight, wide enough for a car (although obviously you cannot drive your car there.”

THREE trails from one brand new parking area! 1) You can hike up to the tri-state marker Or 2) you can go east on the SNETT bike trail, or 3) west on the Airline bike trail Just WEST of the parking lot leads to great signage explaining the huge train wreck that happened here, and the foundations of the old East…

What a cool place! I was visiting from out of town and found this trail to run. Wanna go straight for 40 miles? You’re in luck! A little buggy in some spots but hey, it’s the woods.

★★★★★ — John , Aug 2024

Easy walk on old train bed for first .7 miles out towards tri state marker. Last .3 miles are more difficult, all uphill over rocky terrain.

★★★★★ — John , Sep 2024

Beautiful trails. When on the tri-state trail to see the marker for CT-MA-RI. It's a bit steep at the end, but it's not a tough trek.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

📏 Mile markers 11 mentions

“The one that stands out the most is the trail going to the Tri State Marker, where RI, MA and CT meet.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
