Confirmed from Arlene Shoemaker Flatwoods Nature Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Arlene Shoemaker Flatwoods Nature Preserve
Nice quick walk connecting you to the bike path. Very short walk with well defined path. It was very buggy and there was a bit of poison ivy on the path not too far from the entrance.
Nice little nature preserve tucked into the community. Connects to the bike path. I walked the small gravel parking lot and 1/2 mile trail in the woods.
Very bare bones preserve with a short natural trail in the woods that leads to the Illinois Prarie Path. There's a small gravel parking lot with a picnic table.
Very nicely kept trail. Lots of tree coverage and the colors were changing while I was there. Good place for a nice and easy walk.

The practical stuff
- AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
