Confirmed from Coastal Rail Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Coastal Rail Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (35 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“Nice and easy family walk destination with options to see a beautiful nature mixed with human art pieces.”

👟 good for all levels 2 mentions

“Very easy walk if you’re looking for something for the whole family!”

I walk, run, and roller skate this trail all the time. It runs parallel to the 101 but is elevated, so the ocean views are incredible. It runs from just above Swami's in Encinitas to Chesterfield Dr in Cardiff by the Sea. There are some rolling hills but it is a pretty easy walk...

★★★★★ — Katie , Mar 2022

Lovely walking path, but very crowded. Path is nice and wide, easily accommodating 2 couples to comfortably pass by each other without anyone having to move out of the way.

★★★★★ — Katie , Jul 2024

Costal Rail Trail is a great place for walking, running or pushing a stroller. It is easily wide enough for people to pass each other in comfort for most areas and the trail is nicely paved so accessible for anyone.

★★★★★ — Amanda , Aug 2020

Very easy walk if you’re looking for something for the whole family! Avoid weekends and after work hours if you’re looking for a clear trail without a lot of people.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 8 mentions

“Del Mar Sunset – One of San Diego’s Most Breathtaking Views Watching the sun slowly sink into the ocean from the edge of a cliff is an unforgettable experience.”

  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
