Confirmed from Dougherty Valley Ridge Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Dougherty Valley Ridge Trail
“It's a beautiful trail especially in the morning and evening with views covering entire San Ramon and east bay cities.”
I made a 9.5 mile running loop using this trail. I was staying at the Marriott San Ramon, took the iron horse trail from the central park south to Alcosta, left onto Alcosta and right at Old Ranch Rd, left on Bridle Court to enter the trail.
Beautiful trail , you can see houses on both sides yet you are far away !
Tried out this trail over the weekend and I loved it a lot! It’s not an easy one but it’s excellent. You really feel like you’re in a whole different world, especially since how removed the trail is from everything. Strongly recommend it!
Superb earthen trail with good workout and astonishing sunset views. Look on both sides of the trail to see the beauty of nature in different colors as the sun sets

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
