Confirmed from Iron Horse Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Iron Horse Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (58 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 3 mentions

“The trail from Pleasanton is especially beautiful with trees lined and connects to many parks.”

🏃 great for running 2 mentions

“It's a super long path that is great for running, walking, biking.”

We are fortunate to have the Iron Horse Trail. The trail is paved and used by locals of San Ramon, Dublin, and the Pleasanton area. Other cities connected via this trail are Danville, Walnut Creek, and Concord. The trail is connected to BART as well, which is great if you wish to go to the city using the train.

This is the former Union Pacific right-of-way. The initial segment goes for 24 miles, from Concord to Dublin. It has been extended into Pleasanton for some additional miles. I ride my bike and walk our dog on the trail. But other people use it for jogging, roller skating/blading, or just walking.

My family and I love to ride our bikes here. It's a nice long paved path. There are special bike crossing signals. Path goes from Pleasanton, through San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek, all the way to Concord. A very nice scenic route through neighborhoods.

Nice and flat bike trail. Rode the section from Dublin BART to a shopping mall at San Ramon . Aside from inconvenience from the blockage due to a number of construction . It was a overall nice and easy trail

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
