Confirmed from El Cerro de Los Lunas Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

🌾 quiet & peaceful 3 mentions

“Quiet peaceful beautiful desert terrain.”

Nice volcano with nice hiking trails and great views. This monogenectic volcano of the cat hills volcanic field erupted around 140,000 years ago. The Rio Grande rift is an interesting area to explore.

You see this as you drive by it on the 25. It appears deceivingly small. It definitely is underappreciated. It is worth the detour. We spent 3 hours navigating around it and up to the top. The view is phenomenal.

★★★★★ — Alexander , Sep 2018

El Cerro de Los Lunas is an overlooked and under appreciated place. So many people see the hill daily but never ascend it. There are cliffs, canyons, trees, and incredible rock formations.

★★★★★ — Michael , Sep 2017

When I moved here 5 years ago, I expected a hike up "the hill" would be one of the first things we'd do. Better later than never, I guess. Firstly, I suggest going to the Los Lunas village website and print off the grid map to take with you in case you need any assistance.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 15 mentions

“We took the overlook trail from the east side, heading south first and winding clockwise.”
