Confirmed from Fort Thomas Landmark Tree Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Picnic area offering a loop trail for hiking as well as trees that are labeled, plus picnic tables.
What runners say about Fort Thomas Landmark Tree Trail
“An absolutely beautiful hike, but a shame that most of the historic landmark trees have fallen or been cut down.”
“I've seen blue jays and chipmunks all around the entrance and signage when it's quiet.”
Great hike among the trees, just above the Ohio River. Just under a mile loop with a little up and down. Great little trail for dogs too. Took our 1 year old dachshund and she handled it no problem.
I was told about this as a trail that never gets old. Google maps gets you close but not to the main parking along the road. The trail takes one through history with buildings and imagined ghosts of soldiers training here. The named trees are a nice touch. This is a dog friendly trail.
Great trail with some challenge, but nothing that you can't do with the kids. Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty if it has rained recently. Great short trail near the city. Glad that we found it! Plus you can learn about some trees too.
The **extended trail was 0.8miles at best. The 1st loop we did was the direct path that led to the grass field. Went around again, found the 2 bridges but the other sides led to nothing. The **extended trail (walking straight past the 2 bridges) was a tad longer and had 3 short bursts of climbs.
Trail conditions & character
“Two or 3 steep descents and 2 climbs for which I picked up a walking stick for a little extra support, but just what I wanted for the exercise element.”
“An absolutely beautiful hike, but a shame that most of the historic landmark trees have fallen or been cut down.”
“Trails are narrow and a bit difficult with the 3 dogs we have but again, probably more because of the mud.”
“The 1st loop we did was the direct path that led to the grass field.”
“I've seen blue jays and chipmunks all around the entrance and signage when it's quiet.”
“I would recommend doing the same if you're just looking for a light hike”

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
