Confirmed from Holmes Reservation's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

🌾 quiet & peaceful 6 mentions

“Holmes Reservation is a nice, peaceful area with an amazing water view!”

Beautiful place to walk! In the fall the trees everywhere are pretty with there leaves turning different colors. As you walk keep you're eyes out for the rock piles that have encouraging words and advice on them. Highly recommend, the length of the walk is the perfect distance.

Holmes Reservation is a nice, peaceful area with an amazing water view! Walk towards the water & you'll find well-maintained trails called The Rail Trail & Grace Trail. They span from Cordage Park to Nelson & are off-limits to motorized vehicles, so it's the perfect place to go for a walk.

I love it here. It's quiet, calm, and has beautiful views of the ocean. I take my dog there all the time. It can get muddy at times and it is actively harvested - so there's arent many trails to hike. But, nonetheless, it is lovely

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Plan your run at Holmes Reservation

The practical stuff

  • AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
