Confirmed from Horse Hill Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Horse Hill Preserve
“Absolutely stunning views of the bay, the hills and the horses.”
One of my all-time favorite hikes! You have a chance to see so many different animals, nice plants, and flowers. Easy uphill and long enough to be quite enjoyable. Easy to spend a good hour on the hike. Would definitely recommend.
Horse hill is so cool. The local horse owners payed to preserve it, and stop by frequently to take care of their horses. You can hike thorough the open horse area. Be respectful and don't approach horses unless they come up to you.
It was a bit muddy when I went but stick to the main fire road and you’ll be fine. Absolutely stunning views of the bay, the hills and the horses. I recommend going around sunset :)
Horse Hill has been my backyard for 30 years. I love that the neighbor horses stop at our fence and look into yard, and nicker a hello. I loved being part of the SAVE HORSE HILL group, originally started in the 60's, and after a long uphill battle, became open space, instead of 100 apartments. Miracles happen.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
