Confirmed from Institute Woods' own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
589 acres of woods, farmland & wetlands, with serene walking trails & a wooden footbridge.
What runners say about Institute Woods
“Other than that its a beautiful park with plenty of places to go and look out and its somewhat kept up.”
“So many trails to follow, great place for a walk & run either soloing or company with friends.”
“Most are well traveled and clearly marked.”
It’s my first time hiking here in the woods. Due to the lack of marks at crossroads and Google Map’s misleading directions, a hiker as me even got lost several times. The trails are just like a puzzle. I saw three girls who also lost directions to the swinging bridge.
Very nice place to go and sit out in the sun or have a nice hike. You can walk for hours. I have to say that the trails do get a bit confusing but if you keep walking you'll eventually find your way.
You can park at the Princeton Battlefield state park. Very nice with the fall foliage. You may see some animals, I saw a big doe running away
A small gem. The place connects to the DNR Canal hike trail. There was a colonial infantryman show depicting the American Revolutionary War. They had muskets and canon firing. Washington's men marched here, and so it's historical.
Trail conditions & character
“Other than that its a beautiful park with plenty of places to go and look out and its somewhat kept up.”
“The only thing that annoyed for such a beautiful place it really annoys me when people can't just have a bag and pick up after your dog, it's not that difficult.”
“There are markers early on in the trail but they eventually fade out and you are just left walking and having to make turns that you have no idea where they go.”
“Can definitely get muddy after a lot of rain.”
