Confirmed from Lake Whelchel Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Scenic 7.5-mile loop for hiking and biking, winding through the woods alongside a lake and a creek.

🪧 well-marked 3 mentions

“It would be helpful to have mile markers but for theost part the trail is decent and sort of kept up with.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 5 mentions

“This is also a popular biking trail and I would think it'd be great for beginners or those looking to have a peaceful meandering ride.”

Was recommended this trail by a local. That’s all i needed to hear, and I was in the mood for a good hike. The signage for the trail head is well marked from the road and there is a decent amount of parking. This was a week day, so not sure how crowded a weekend would be. The hike was great, and long.

Lovely mostly wooded trail. 8.5 miles round-trip from parking lot all the way around the lake. Saw rabbits and a Heron. Go early in day to avoid too much heat when walking around the open dam portion of the trail. Rolling, easy trail with basically only two uphill sections.

★★★★★ — Susan , May 2022

This is definitely one of my favorite trails to do. Especially in the spring/summer. Plenty of wild life to see, water sources and a lot of shade. There is about a 2 mile stretch out in the open but it's worth it. I personally don't care.

★★★★★ — The , May 2024

It's such a crazy trail. It's hot, swampy, and buggy, but im from Louisiana, so it felt alright to me. I hiked the whole 8 miles with no water, stopping at the boat launch to find that, to my joy, there is a drinking fountain. That was the halfway point, so yay.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
