Confirmed from Maple Bay Natural Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Hiking trails and a beach are found at this nature preserve along the Lake Michigan shore.
What runners say about Maple Bay Natural Area
“Beautiful nature preserve, proposed to my fiance here last year on the beach!”
“Nice, easy hike with a nice beach.”
It’s always a good day when you can hike at Maple Bay. The beach area is amazing in the summer and the shoreline and woods are always a great place for a walk. Just finished a snowshoe hike down to Petobego Pond. The wind was howling but the bay was beautiful.
This park is one of the public access points to the Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan. It has a winding, sometimes steep path through the woods down to the beach. There are actually three points to the beach via trails that come out in different places along the beach. It was really beautiful when we went there.
IF YOU HAVE LITTLE KIDS, NOT THE PLACE TO GO! Unfortunately we weren't able to rock hound here because the walk from the path to the water was about 18 min and with littles, too much. However, adults open to a quick hike, and great views, absolutely worth it.
Loved the trails! Beautiful scenery! Trails lead to the beach and to petobego bay trails.

“There are several other wooded nature trails to follow, so make sure you notice the markers on the plaquard.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
