We went here on a hot weekend in June (high of 100). Beautiful place to walk around. Interesting dynamic and group of people running the place. Everyone is really nice and there's a lot of character. Watch out for rattlesnakes.
I work on Mare Island and I haven’t had a chance to check this area out yet. Visitors try to find the highest peak where the Ghost ship art pieces are or the cemetery but I have yet to go through the trail. I felt like drivers were driving fast on the road. There’s a parking lot at the bottom before the trail.
Easy to moderate out-and-back walk/hike from the pin to the top of the island. Fantastic views await you. Lots of benches along the way if you tire easily. Periodic shade. Just past the parking lot you will find a well-groomed cemetery.
This place is definitely worth a visit! Its not crowded at all (this is a good thing) and the views from the top of Carquinez Strait and Mare Island Naval station are worth the short, easy hike up on a paved road mostly. Take the 1/3 hike down to the bunkers, its worth it!
