Confirmed from Michigan Air Line Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Michigan Air Line Trail
“The surface is exceptionally smooth and well-maintained, perfect for a road bike or hybrid.”
“The first leg of the trip followed the paved Macomb Orchard Trail, a straight and scenic ride through suburban and rural areas.”
“The trail is beautifully scenic, passing by several small lakes and through peaceful wooded areas.”
This is a great new rail-to-trail. It is smoothly paved with asphalt. It is a fast 5.5 mile trail from Haggerty Rd. ending at Wixom Rd. in downtown Wixom. It is going to be completed in a year or two and will then connect to the paved rail-to-trail called Huron Valley Trail and so on and so on.
Love the trail It’s great for a bike ride and head into downtown Wixom where there is dairy Queen and about 7 different restaurants
This past week, I completed the challenging and incredibly rewarding Michigan US Bike Route 1, also known as the Great Lake-to-Lake Trail, this time heading from east to west.
Love this trail! It will connect you to many other trails that can take you to South Lyon or up to Rochester Hills and even further. The Airline trail is clean, safe and well-maintained.

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
