Confirmed from Muttontown Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Muttontown Preserve

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (229 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 11 mentions

“Beautiful park, nice wildlife, trails marked very well, love this place, will come back again.”

Beautiful preserve with variety of landscapes from forests to meadows to old estates. My preference to park is at Bill Paterson nature center that provides access to trails, restrooms and printed maps. Good way to navigate preserve is AllTrails app that has major trails captured.

Some of the trails are well maintained, but the trails' have a lot of fork roads; you need a map. You may get the map behind the house. After you finish, you can drive the car to the Chelsea Mason to walk around, or you can use the trails to walk to the Mason.

Very beautiful old nature preserve in a nice area. It's well maintained and mowed in many areas along the trails. The ruins are limited and full of graffiti from what I've found. There are several different areas of the preserve and they have different traits.

Great place for a walk. We brought our cats. We were bit confused where the trails went... people around us also didn’t really know where to go, so we just walked around a bit. Wether was great. Wished we could spend more time getting lost:-)

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
