Confirmed from Peters Lake Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Peters Lake Park

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (627 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 7 mentions

“Mainly well maintained, but there are a few spots that are over-taken by roots that could make it hard if you have trouble walking.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 9 mentions

“Had already gone to the east shore of this beautiful lake, which is wonderful but has VERY limited parking.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 8 mentions

“Water was very calm while we were there and the trails are well marked and maintained.”

Peters Lake Park is a hidden gem nestled within a sprawling neighborhood. The main trail that surrounds the lake is wide and paved. Their are many side trails which are well maintained but dirt. If you are a nature enthusiast this is a place for you. Many species of birds inhabit this park. Fishing is also permitted.

Absolutely my favorite place to walk! Since our kids were little this was always one of our favorite spots! Beautiful scenery year-round! Lots of friendly dogs and people!

This place is a hidden gem. I have lived in the South Hills all my life and never knew it was here. Walking around the trail will take about an hour. Mainly well maintained, but there are a few spots that are over-taken by roots that could make it hard if you have trouble walking. All flat areas.

I couldn’t believe this was in my back yard and I never knew it! If you live in Peters / South Hills area, you have to visit at least once. My son loves to fish. Not all of his fishing spots are gorgeous. This one is, by far, my favorite and I can get a peaceful walk in :)

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
