Confirmed from Piestewa Peak Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Trio of trails, boasting panoramic views, desert foliage, and steep rock formations for all fitness levels.
What runners say about Piestewa Peak Trailhead
“The trail is well-maintained and easy to access, which makes it a go-to whether you’re a local or just visiting.”
“Nestled within a stunning expanse of desert landscape, this hiking and walking area offers an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.”
“What makes this hike difficult is that it gets steeper as you go and the air gets much thinner on hot days with noticeably less oxygen and very little shade.”
Great trail. A lot of loose rock and direct sunlight, so make sure you come prepared with plenty of water and sunscreen. If you need both hands to balance, bring a backpack, you'll move much faster that way. Great views! So worth getting to the top!
High foot traffic trailhead with ample parking, which fills up and fluctuates throughout the weekend. Weekdays are rather calm. It's a challenging yet moderate hike to the summit, with plenty in the shade in the am.
Great views. Well maintained trail that starts a few steps from parking lot. The view is fantastic all the way up so you can stop and go back down anytime... downhill is more difficult than up but very doable. Good shoes are a must. Entry is free but entrance gate closes at 7 pm.
This trailhead is thoughtfully designed and offers a great starting point for those who are eager to embark on the journey to climb the peak. It's a welcoming place for adventurers to gather their strength before taking on the challenge ahead. The trail yo the peak is moderate but takes longer than you'd expect.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
