Confirmed from Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (155 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 15 mentions

“That being said, it was BEAUTIFUL and we even took a small detour to go up to Pilot Butte itself to get to higher ground.”

Wow, just wow. We had an almost spiritual experience here. When we first started the loop it was raining but then it cleared off and we got to see this amazing rainbow, or two. Then we saw the pronghorns and my fiancée was ecstatic.

It was awesome we saw 25 horses today. Our family went by there around 5pm and they were out. Right after a good rain shower it was a cool day. We even saw a couple of young horses. You drove about 3/4 up the hill and you can drive right next to them slow..

★★★★★ — John , Jul 2022

This is a scenic back country drive that gives you a feel for the untamed past of the West. I started in Green River and worked my way to Rock Springs. The road is gravel and fairly smooth in the beginning but after a few miles it gets bumpy and rocky.

★★★★★ — Christopher , Jul 2023

Really enjoyed this scenic route! Don’t listen to the one star reviews about no horses. We saw several herds on the Rock Springs side. We saw some fighting, saw multiple foals, and saw herds running. They crossed the road in front of us twice and were fairly close.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
