Confirmed from Point Dume's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Tranquil coastal area featuring trails & rocky coves, plus blufftop views of Santa Catalina Island.
What runners say about Point Dume
“The trail is well maintained and easy to walk.”
“The loop trail is very scenic but not too strenuous, and you can take in the whole sight seeing experience within the time constraints of the parking limits.”
“It took us about 10 minutes easy hike to get on top of the cliff.”
Parking can be challenging right by the trailhead, however, parking is available on the side streets but just be careful to park fully off the street and not in a NO PARKING zone (you will get a ticket!). Trails are easy and marked around the bluff, however, watch your step by the edge.
We arrived at Point Dume parking lot at 7:30 pm, plenty of parking spaces available, paid $3 at the prepaid ticket paying station. There were a lot of photo shootings right at the cliffs, the sunset was beautiful and unforgettable, we even saw some whales passing by.
Very peaceful place to enjoy the sunset and beach. Overall, the beach was not too crowded and the sunset was majestic. There is a short hiking trail that offers some pretty nice coastal views. Also if you are lucky you can spot some seals on the rocks.
Easy hike with Scenic views. We parked in the beach parking and started hike from beach. The trail itself is beautiful with all yellow flowers all around and then the stunning views of pacific ocean. The trail is well maintained and easy to walk.
Trail conditions & character
“The loop trail is very scenic but not too strenuous, and you can take in the whole sight seeing experience within the time constraints of the parking limits.”
“Go to the parking lot in front of Westward beach, this parking lot is huge, the one in front of the destination where google map took us to only has less than 10 spots.”
“The view is stunning—you can see all of Zuma Beach and much of the hills surrounding Big Dume Beach.”
“Nice beach and the clip trail, paid parking and restrooms available.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
