We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Pompton Valley Rail Trail - River Drive Trailhead yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Pompton Valley Rail Trail - River Drive Trailhead
“Not the most scenic trail but there’s a horse ranch at the northern end.”
Excellent bike path, straight shot that goes from rt 23 pompton plains to mothers ale house. Very scenic. Great for bike riding or walking.
The northern terminus of the Pompton Valley Rail Trail. Dirt lot to the right of the trailhead, in a rather secluded area just off route 23 north. This area is prone to flooding, so weather may dictate parking conditions.
PLENTY of parking available: on either side of Jackson Ave., nearby the Newark-Pompton Tpke crossing in the CVS parking lot (just park by the street, keeping the spots near the stores available for shoppers), as well as street parking just off of several cross streets.
A beautiful peaceful trail filled with beautiful views. Horses ( which caught me off guard too ) and a project for the children to paint a stone and connect it to a large snake made of stones. You have to see it to appreciate it. All in all a wonderful construction and you should experience it at least once. I love it!
