Confirmed from Ramapo Dunderberg Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Park featuring kid-friendly hiking trails.
What runners say about Ramapo Dunderberg Trailhead
“A few hours or all day - we did 11 miles on a sunny & icy January weekday and it was gorgeous.”
“It's a weird spot with no parking allowed but relatively peaceful even on a warm Saturday afternoon.”
Dear fellow hikers: when there are no sidewalks, it is New York State law to walk against traffic (left side of the road). Literally every other hiker we saw to and from the parking lot was walking on the right.
This is a good walking area, not for people with bad knees and who can't cope with walking on rough ground. Take plenty of water, food and snacks, there's no facilities (toilet at Tuxedo railroad station). If you go by train from NYC give yourself plenty of time to get back to the train.
I relatively like the hiking courses in the Ramapo area, and hiking here is also fun because there are intermittent streams and various courses. I walked Claudius Smith’s Den Short Loop clockwise for 5 miles in 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Amazing hike (year round) from this trailhead (park at the train station & walk in). A few hours or all day - we did 11 miles on a sunny & icy January weekday and it was gorgeous. Only saw 2 other hikers all day.
Trail conditions & character
“One thing that's disappointing is that you can't park right in front of the trailhead, so you have to park near the train station and walk for about 10 minutes.”
“Walking is easy from Tuxedo, good range of terrain and views from Almost Perpendicular and above Claudius Smith's Den.”
“It's a weird spot with no parking allowed but relatively peaceful even on a warm Saturday afternoon.”
“Worthwhile to get a map (there’s a booth at the farmer’s market every Saturday) since there are so many different trails that crisscross, though they are pretty well marked.”
