We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Red Shack Trailhead yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Red Shack Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (87 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“Nice hike, beautiful views of the river to relax by, just be ready to sweat coming back up 😅 also don't forget the bug spray 🦟”

It was 3.3 miles total, so a little over a mile to get one way....Took me and the pup about 30 mins to get down to the water, and about an hour to hike back up. Took plenty of shade breaks on the way out, its about 15-20 degree incline and about 78 degrees out in mid September....

Nice trail. No joke about being steep. I didn't have time that morning to make it to the river. Yet an enjoyable hike for this fat guy.

An excellent hike! The rivers are flowing strong at the end of October, and it was nice to dip my toes in the cold water. It's incredibly quiet until you reach the bottom and hear the river - I liked how peaceful it was.

Found this hike on our way to the American River Resort. Nice little hike down to the river with good views and a great spot to cool off before heading back.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

⛰️ Hills / elevation 14 mentions

“First hike and apparently there’s 2 entrances - a steep on which is in the back side near the parking and the other is on the left side at the entrance of the parking!”
