Confirmed from Salem Woods Highland Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Destination for tranquil nature hikes through a large woodland park with marked trails.
What runners say about Salem Woods Highland Park
“I go there feeling off at times and every time I leave I'm full of love and admiration of how beautiful life and nature is.”
Very nice but can be confusing to get to. The entrance to the trail is at the end of the parking lot for Salem Greens Golf Course. If you've made it there, you're well on your way to a nice wooded adventure.
Never knew this existed until yesterday! Nice local spot for a hike/walk. The trails are well marked. Several up and downs. A little mud.
Nice walk, especially with young children. Unfortunately some dog owners do not pick up after their dogs and leave feces on the trails.
Came here on 12/9/2023. All the leaves that are going to fall have fell so just be careful bc they hide rocks and you might slip and fall, but otherwise the main path (yellow) was marked well and you can go in either direction. The blue and red paths not so well, just be careful.
Trail conditions & character
“We had a little difficulty finding the trailhead and had to put the golf course into waze to find it.”
“Moderate trail difficulty with roots, rocks and changes in elevation throughout.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
