Confirmed from Schmitz Park Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Park featuring forested areas with hiking trails, plus a river.
What runners say about Schmitz Park Trail
“Beautiful little trail system for a nice walk.”
Love this place! Great matrix of trails. Be prepared for wet and muddy in places. And of course my dogs were on leash the whole time.
Beautiful little trail system for a nice walk. Very accessible and low key. Fun to park in the neighborhood east of the park and then walk through the forest to get to the beach. There are some impressive sections of old forest in here, and some great views with light coming through the canopy.
Small, but interesting trails that wind around a bit in near old growth forest. You will encounter off leash dogs there
This is a really big forest trails park. More trails than Seward Park, you could get lost for awhile.
Trail conditions & character
“Many folks seem to let their dogs off leash back here so be aware if you are sensitive to that.”
“Be prepared for wet and muddy in places.”
“Not very stroller friendly on some trails, but wonderful nonetheless.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
