Confirmed from Skyline Wilderness Area Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Great single track trails in the centre of the city. Lovely views of the whole city as you go across the trial. Moderate to d trials. Bunch of connected trails winding in and out up and about the the hills.

Park at the parking lot for the petrified forest. Lots of trails going every which way so always new areas to explore. Super easy, well groomed trails. Right in town so you don't have to drive far. They have doggie bags there to pick up after your dog.

★★★★★ — Kayte , Oct 2016

Easy access, well groomed trails. The best part? Five feet from a garbage can was a used condom and empty Swisher Sweet wrapper. Keep it classy Rapid.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 18 mentions

“You can go from overlooking Rapid City to being secluded along a mountain trail within a few yards.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
