We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of The Preserve yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about The Preserve
“Took the red trail which is clearly marked.”
Nice sized network of trails with a couple cool pieces of history. The trails run through Essex, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook. Each town has its own parking areas, with Westbrook having two, and the other towns having one.
Trails are well marked. Photo that was posted of trail map was helpful. Great rustic scene. First time here. Ran 3 miles and didn’t get lost. Be careful of loose rocks and pay attention to your foot placement. Enjoy!
Lovely hike with my dog. Took the red trail which is clearly marked. Nobody else on the trail. No bugs, and anyone with even a modest level of fitness can do this.
Hiking with group, moderate to difficult because of elevations. Red trail needs additional markers
Trail conditions & character

“The trails are mostly on the easier side with flat and wide trails, but some areas got to more of a moderate difficulty in steeper sections.”

- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
