Confirmed from Tom's Thumb's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Tom’s Thumb is like the Hollywood Boulevard of Scottsdale hiking. It’s gorgeous, iconic, and absolutely crawling with people who think silence in nature is a myth. If you’re allergic to crowds, you’ve been warned. Bring patience and maybe a noise-canceling aura. That said, the trail itself? Damn near flawless.

★★★★☆ — Mike , Jul 2025

Great hike. Especially if you love rocks and desert views. Went late in the day with my dog and was fortunate because it wasn't too crowded. I found this to be a challenging, but doable, hike. Lots of incline, but not rock scrambling, and the uphill was balanced by flat and downward slope areas.

★★★★★ — Ginger , May 2022

Lovely views on this hike and not too crowded if you start early. You may meet a friendly guide along the way with useful tips. Difficulty level ranges from easy to medium depending on your fitness level. It was a breeze compared to Camelback Mountain. You will not be disappointed if you enjoy the beauty of nature.

★★★★★ — Z , Dec 2021

Winter/Spring is the best time to experience this hike. If it’s cloudy even better - there’s no shade so cloudy canopy is best. The hike is all in an incline for about 1.4 miles in but all worthwhile. The views are great all around. Get out there, enjoy the journey and re-center yourself.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
