Confirmed from Walker Preserve Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Beautiful trail from Santee to Lakeside. About 6 miles long, mostly flat with beautiful spots to sit and enjoy the view of the San Diego River. There’s street parking on the Santee side and a parking lot on the Lakeside side. Go early as there is not much in the way of shade and it can get very warm very quickly.

This is a new favorite for our family of 5. We love to bike and run this path. It’s well maintained, clean, and a great variety of scenery. The path is mostly very smooth compressed gravel, with a few spots of erosion here or there. Easily doable with a jogging stroller or bike buggy.

This is a great place to have a routine walk, run or ride. The official River Walk trail begins at Magnolia and extends East all the way to Channel road in Lakeside. Nice features along the way, like a secluded wooden semicircle deck with shade.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work

  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
