Confirmed from Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Nature reserve featuring a scenic river, oak-pine woodlands & wildlife, including deer & waterfowl.

“The trails are well maintained and bring you right along the Carmans River, with beautiful views of the water and sky.”

“Wertheim is a hidden gem on Long Island for anyone who loves nature, birding, or just peaceful walks.”
I had a couple of hours to kill so I stopped by. The lady in the visitor center was very kind and informative. I enjoyed walking the exhibit and learning of the Wertheim NWR, the animals/natural habitat, and environmental concerns. I was able to walk a bit on the White Oak trail.
Superb! Another reason to Hike Long Island! Trails everywhere, the great outdoors, a wonderful (no charges or fees) way to get out and enjoy the change of seasons and color!
Hiked Black Tupelo trail to Indian Landing: fewer river views than from White Oak trail, but trail itself is quite pleasant and photogenic. Mosquitoes are not as bad as in some other preserves, still bug spray or wipes are recommended. Very nice visitor center with restrooms and dark room presenting bird songs.
This place is beautiful and amazing so many trails to walk and boy can you get a workout here lots of wildlife running free which I love lots of little nooks that you can hide away and be peaceful I really recommend this place and it's all free you don't have to pay for parking none of that and it's just so close to…
