We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Wharton State Forest yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Sprawling park with ponds, rivers & lakes, plus hiking trails, campsites & miles of unpaved roads.
What runners say about Wharton State Forest
“Campsite was very good: big lots, clean, bathrooms, water pump.”
“From the moment I embarked on a canoe journey down the Mullica River to my campsite, I was captivated by the stunning natural wonders that surrounded me.”
“There is some road noise during the day but it gets quiet during the night.”
Be careful of the ticks. I found one attached to me today. So glad I checked. It looked like a wood tick. Had to contact my doctor. Beautiful long trails otherwise. I enjoyed the area a lot. It’s quiet and peaceful. Saw deer, rabbits, different birds, frogs. Loved the abandoned railroad tracks.
Wharton State Forest is an absolute gem in the heart of New Jersey, and my experience there was nothing short of magical. From the moment I embarked on a canoe journey down the Mullica River to my campsite, I was captivated by the stunning natural wonders that surrounded me.
Great state campground! Very inexpensive, with plenty of things to keep you busy. Tubing, bike trails, water sources (no swimming tho) campsites are huge, there are "bathrooms" not the best but bathrooms none the less
Pretty awesome hiking. Decent wildlife and very clean. I walked 8 miles there today and still didn’t want to leave. I’ll be back!
